Why Director Sophie Barthes Felt Compelled to Bring ‘Madame Bovary’ to the Big Screen For a Modern Audience

Barthes breathes new life into Gustave Flaubert’s classic tale of desire. Gustave Flaubert’s classic novel Madame Bovary is no stranger to the big screen, as the 1865 book (impressively enough, it was Flaubert’s debut novel) has been translated to film at least seven times over the decades, including a Jean Renoir-directed version from 1934 and a breathless, Isabelle Huppert-starring 1991 take from Claude Chabrol. But that didn’t stop filmmaker Sophie Barthes from wanting to make it her own.

For her version, Barthes abstained from trying to turn the story of a brutally unsatisfied woman — Madame Bovary herself — into an overly modern tale about shame and the consumption of material goods, instead relying on the strength of Flaubert’s original story. The result is a mostly faithful take on the novel, which sees Mia Wasikowska memorably taking up the role of Emma Bovary, a once-pious young woman in provincial France who grows weary of her life as the wife of doctor, ultimately seeking out more (and more) in the form of various lovers and a growing appetite for material goods (particularly sumptuous gowns, lovingly brought to the screen by costume designers Christian Gasc and Valerie Ranchoux).

August 5th, 2015 Caps Gallery Interviews Projects

In our picture archive, none of the movie dedicated interview screencaps could be found before. After the massive gallery additions of miscellaneous career projects and magazine scans, I decided to upload tons of movie interview captures. I’ve added bunch of caps, including Crimson Peak, Jane Eyre, Amelia, Alice in Wonderland, Stoker, The Double, Defiance and even more images from various movie interviews. I’m adding many videos to the video library, too and I’m currently filling it with miscellaneous appearances, interviews and behind the scene videos of Mia.

After adding tons of scans, I searched for Mia’s miscellaneous career projects where she is in a role of a director/writer, and also few images have been added from her short-film and voice works. You can find Mia’s latest project, Madly on the list, too, where she is an author of one of the 7 love stories from around the world. The massive upload also includes the projects like The Nightingale and the rose, which is a short animated movie, based on classic fairytale by Oscar Wilde. A Romance of many dimensions is a study on the ocean in extreme slow motion, featuring Wasikowska. I’ve also added screencaps & an image from Touch of Evil where some of 2011’s stand-out film actors appear in ‘a video gallery of cinematic villainy’ for New York Times.

August 5th, 2015 Gallery Magazines

I’ve been having some free time this summer holidays, so I decided to take a look at the picture archive and search for the images which are missing. I’ve added bunch of old/new images of Mia, which were not uploaded before, and as I discovered that quite many magazine scans needed to be added, too, and I did so. Some scans still might be missing, but I tried my best in the time I had and uploaded quite many images. I’ll work on searching even more soon to have complete library of magazines in the gallery. The additions include 2014 & 2015 magazine scans, covers, editorials and articles, so be sure to check them out, as you might not even seen some of them and seem pretty rare to you.

August 4th, 2015 Site Updates

I’ve been working on the new matching layouts for the main site and video archive and a bit different one in the photo gallery, which is an edited version of one of the wonderful Ray’s premades. Also, while the site was on a short-maintenance mode, behind the scenes I added a lot of pages, so you can now view each film/tv series and misc project details when clicking on them in the career pages and also I’ve been working on the video library where tons of videos have been added. The Image archive has already got 10,000+ high quality images uploaded by me, and still growing.

Hope you enjoy the new version. Please let me know if you notice any errors or questions. Thank you!
