January 17th, 2010 "Alice in Wonderland" Articles

Release Date: March 5 (in Disney Digital 3D and IMAX 3D)
Studio: Buena Vista
Genre: Family Adventure
Director: Tim Burton
Writer: Linda Woolverton (based on the novels by Lewis Carroll)
Cast: Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Crispin Glover, Anne Hathaway, Stephen Fry, Christopher Lee, Michael Sheen, Alan Rickman
Studio Description: Johnny Depp stars as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter. Alice embarks on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny and end the Red Queen’s reign of terror.

Analysis: Alice in Wonderland brings together frequent collaborators Tim Burton and Johnny Depp for an adaptation of the classic Lewis Carroll novel. Their last feature together, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, grossed $52 million, a modest success considering it was a brutally violent R-rated musical set in 19th-century London. More relevant is the box office for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, their last family-oriented live-action collaboration, which grossed over $206 million in 2005. Charlie had cross-generational appeal, reaching adults who had nostalgic memories of the book and the 1971 adaptation Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The same argument could be made for Alice in Wonderland, in that it’s a classic story with a famous prior adaptation (Disney’s 1951 version) that should resonate outside of just the younger demographic.

December 31st, 2009 "Alice in Wonderland" Articles

Now that 2009 is so last year – well, almost – it’s time to look forward to the next 12 months and the start of a new decade. Here we present our guide to 2010: the most promising newcomers, how the old guard are staying ahead of the game, plus the latest creative thinking in the arts, technology, politics and culture

11 FILM Alice in Wonderland Expect Tim Burton’s reworking of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale, due for release in March, to be as mind-bendingly strange as his source material. Alice, now a headstrong 17-year-old, goes back down the rabbit hole where she sets out to free Wonderland from the reign of the despotic Red Queen. Australian actress Mia Wasikowska plays Alice and Johnny Depp is in his tripped-out element as the Mad Hatter. A combination of live action and motion capture technology has been used to help Burton recreate the hallucinatory quality of Carroll’s story. AC

Actress Mia Wasikowska tells the L.A. Times that it was “isolating” to take on the role of Alice in the upcoming Tim Burton film “Alice in Wonderland,” based on the Lewis Carroll classics. “I was basically planted in this sea of green,” the 20 year-old actress said; she shot about 90% of her scenes in front of a green screen to be composited later. She’d find herself talking to a tennis ball or a bit of tape meant to stand in for the Cheshire Cat, the caterpillar and other animated creatures. “I really had to use my imagination.”

In a post on Hero Complex, Wasikowska also praises Johnny Depp for being “brave and smart.” Some of his choices seemed a bit outlandish at first — that hair! — but the more I’ve seen of the film, the better it looks.

This trailer played before I saw “Avatar” in IMAX 3-D last weekend; it has more narrative focus than the earlier teasers. And all its in-your-face moves are fun in 3-D. If the Cheshire Cat still makes me want to throw popcorn at the screen, the actors gleefully playing in their invented world makes up for it. Except, that is, for Wasikowska — she seems a bit lost, exactly as Alice should be.
