Now that 2009 is so last year – well, almost – it’s time to look forward to the next 12 months and the start of a new decade. Here we present our guide to 2010: the most promising newcomers, how the old guard are staying ahead of the game, plus the latest creative thinking in the arts, technology, politics and culture

11 FILM Alice in Wonderland Expect Tim Burton’s reworking of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale, due for release in March, to be as mind-bendingly strange as his source material. Alice, now a headstrong 17-year-old, goes back down the rabbit hole where she sets out to free Wonderland from the reign of the despotic Red Queen. Australian actress Mia Wasikowska plays Alice and Johnny Depp is in his tripped-out element as the Mad Hatter. A combination of live action and motion capture technology has been used to help Burton recreate the hallucinatory quality of Carroll’s story. AC

On Entertainment Weekly’s list of people to watch in 2010, Mia Wasikowska was listed as number one. Read what they had to say below.

Mia Wasikowska (”Alice in Wonderland”), Reeve Carney (the ”Spider-Man” musical), and eight other newcomers who we think could be household names by this time next year

Where you’ve seen her: The Aussie actress was still a teenager when she scored her first American role as a troubled gymnast on HBO’s In Treatment in 2008, and she recently appeared in this year’s Hilary Swank starrer Amelia.

Big in 2010 because: She landed the lead role in one of next year’s most talked about projects, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland , due next March. She’ll also appear in the indie comedy The Kids Are All Right, opposite Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo.

Mia Wasikowska

Age: 19

Years on List: 2009

What She’s Done: Hailing from the land Down Under, she had a breakthrough role in the HBO series ‘In Treatment.’

What’s Next: This fall she’ll play rival pilot to Hilary Swank’s ‘Amelia’ (Earhart). Then it’s the title, potentially star-making role in Tim Burton’s highly anticipated ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ alongside Johnny Depp, and as the child of a lesbian couple in the comedy ‘The Kids Are All Right.’

Industry Buzz: She won’t be known as Mia Whatshername much longer, since this ballet dancer-turned-actress is destined to break out in a big way. She’s already displayed terrific acting chops in HBO’s ‘In Treatment’ and opposite Daniel Craig in ‘Defiance,’ but now she’ll really make her name — with upcoming roles in ‘Amelia,’ ‘The Kids Are All Right’ and, of course, as Alice in Tim Burton’s fantastical ‘Alice in Wonderland’ update. Those looking for a new nickname might want to try Mia WOWsikowska.
